Welcome to the Robert College Home page. I hope that you find the information on this page to be both interesting and helpful.
Robert College was founded in 1863 and has operated continuously longer than any other American school outside the United States. The school, along with its sister school, the American College for Girls, founded in 1871, has provided educational leadership for over a century-- first in the Ottoman Empire and then the Turkish Republic. In 1971, the two institutions merged on the former American College for Girls campus to create the current coeducational day and boarding school for Turkish nationals. Robert College has long been regarded as the leading private school in Turkey, and as a leader in Turkish education.
Since 1971, Robert College has evolved into a five-year, bilingual-medium high school program which includes one-year of English immersion ("Lise Prep"), followed by a four year upper school program in which, English, Math, Science, Art, Music and Physical Education are taught in English, while Turkish Language and Literature and the Social Sciences are taught in Turkish. Students are admitted to Robert College on the basis of a highly competitive national examination. In 2005, 37,000 students took the examination. The 194 students who were admitted to Robert College were drawn from the top 4% of the applicant pool.
The school benefits from American and Turkish sponsorship and is governed by a Board of Trustees made up of Turkish and US citizens. It operates under the jurisdiction of the Turkish Ministry of Education and is also accredited by the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS). As stated in our Statement of Purpose, "The academic program is designed to enable talented and highly motivated students to become bilingual, to encourage the pursuit of academic excellence, and to prepare students for success in college and university. It hopes to enable its students to acquire confidence and a sense of self-worth by meeting the challenges of a demanding program."
