“Mathematics Seen with Other Eyes” Project Wins Award
Robert College’s “Mathematics Seen with Other Eyes” project won second place at the Istanbul University Faculty of Business Management High School Management and Economics Project Competition.
Started in 2009, the goal of the “Mathematics Seen with Other Eyes” project is to make people aware that there are few education opportunities for visually impaired students, the amount of materials available for them to use is limited, there is no special curriculum, and there are few people qualified to teach in this field; and to create solutions that address these issues.
Under the leadership of teacher Özgür Akas, 21 Robert College students modified the sixth grade mathematics and geometry syllabus to make it easy for visually impaired students to understand. The Robert College students prepared a CD which explains the different subjects so that visually impaired students wanting to follow the program later could work more easily.
Özgür Akas explained that the program not only teaches mathematics to participants, they also acquire a new way of learning so they can succeed in other subjects.
Congratulations to the students and their instructor Özgür Akas.
